THE PROJECT
We supported the training of puppies to help prevent diabetic crises in children. We chose to focus on a health issue that is particularly sensitive for children and adolescents, aiming to provide both immediate practical support and a long-term educational benefit.
This initiative also enables us to recognise and reward deserving young people in a meaningful and lasting way, while maintaining a connection that may encourage their future involvement in Rotaract and Rotary, thereby fostering the growth of our membership with committed and qualified young people.
We therefore supported the training of two diabetic alert dogs. These dogs are able to warn people with diabetes of an impending change in blood glucose levels. This ability is particularly important for children with diabetes who, while playing, sleeping or engaged in other activities, may not notice the onset of a diabetic crisis and could risk losing consciousness or even their lives if not treated immediately with insulin.
This capability is now scientifically recognised by the leading organisations dedicated to diabetes care.
THE INVESTMENT
The non-profit organisation SUPERDOGS supports the DAD (Diabetes Alert Dogs) project through a dog trainer based in our province. We are fortunate to have this centre of excellence in Capiago Intimiano, at the Scuola Cinofila BJ, managed by Mr Sergio Ghidelli.
During the 2019–2020 year, the budget allocated was €1,500.00 per dog.
