THE ITALIAN CONSTITUTION AND CRIMINAL PROCEEDINGS “We, European Citizens, Take the Stage: Constitution and Criminal Proceedings” At the Como Rebbio Comprehensive School, justice came into the classroom, with students taking centre stage in a real criminal trial—and much more. On the morning of 22 May, third-year students at the Como Rebbio Comprehensive School took part in an engaging and hands-on citizenship and legality education experience, observing first-hand how criminal proceedings begin and unfold, while becoming active participants themselves. The timing was especially meaningful, as the following day marked the anniversary of the Capaci massacre, in which Giovanni Falcone, Francesca Morvillo, and the police officers assigned to their protection lost their lives. This connection gave even greater depth and significance to the experience shared with the students. DATE The project presentation took place on 19 April 2012. THE BEGINNING The idea originated with President Moschioni, who proposed moving beyond the concept of a single annual service project by giving greater continuity and impact to Rotary activities through a service initiative spanning three presidential terms. The Club approved the proposal, and the three Presidents involved—Moschioni, D’Angelo, and Mascetti—signed the agreement for the “fund allocation project.” THE FUND At the end of each Rotary year, €15,000 would be set aside to be used for a major project benefiting the city. THE SITUATION At the end of the second Rotary year, the first €30,000 had already been allocated (in a dedicated current account). During the third presidency, the task was to complete the project. THE 2012–2016 PROJECT The Volta Lighthouse, located in San Maurizio, Brunate, at an altitude of 900 metres above Lake Como, was built in 1927 to mark the bicentenary of the birth of Alessandro Volta. In the same year, the Tempio Voltiano was inaugurated on the lakeside to house Volta’s scientific instruments, including the first electric battery. A scientific congress was also organised, bringing together 20 Nobel Prize laureates from around the world—an event that remains unique in the history of science. Since then, the lighthouse has illuminated the night with its distinctive rotating tricolour beam, visible from many kilometres away. The panoramic view from the site is truly spectacular.Following repeated reports from a Rotary Club of Como member concerning poor maintenance, structural deterioration, and technical faults affecting the lighthouse’s operation, the Club began exploring possible solutions in 2004. The project In 2007, on the occasion of World Sight Day, a very young writer, Elisa Raimondi, published a small book entitled “Even Princesses Wear Glasses”, in which she describes, through the language of fairy tales, her love-hate relationship with her “magic lenses.”There are everyday actions that adults perform without even thinking, but which are much more difficult for children. One of these is simply putting on a pair of glasses. Elisa experienced this difficulty from an early age, but thanks to her mother’s patience and her own determination, she learned to accept and overcome it.From this experience came the inspiration to write a story set in an imaginary kingdom, where a princess regains her lost smile with the help of the Iris Fairies and two enchanted crystals. A child can see them as a pair of glasses, while an adult can see them as magical eyes that help …
THE PROJECT A social inclusion project through the creation of residential solutions equipped with suitable facilities for people with disabilities within a new Residential Healthcare Facility (RSD) in the Alto Lario district.The project was submitted in accordance with the guidelines of the Rotary Club Como and Baradello Disability Fund, managed by the Fondazione Provinciale della Comunità Comasca ONLUS and ANFFAS ONLUS – Centro Lario e Valli (Menaggio), in collaboration with Fondazione La Rosa Blu ONLUS. The investment As part of the co-financing request, in addition to the related financial plan submitted to the Fund, the following equipment was included, for which a contribution of €2,500.00 was requested, based on the suppliers’ quotations:1 patient lift, complete with lifting sling – €1,400.00 (VAT excluded) 1 ergometer for passive, assisted and active lower-limb therapy – €1,540.00 (VAT excluded) Fondazione La Rosa Blu ONLUS contributed to the purchase of the above-mentioned equipment by providing a non-repayable grant of €557.60.
THE IDEA On the occasion of our Club’s 90th anniversary, we embraced the Merriam-Webster definition of service as “contribution to the welfare of others.”With the aim of building on the many initiatives we have carried out in our local community over the years, we chose Social Street Food as our three-year service project. The project This is a social reintegration project for the residents of the Piccola Casa Federico Ozanam ODV Association, for which an information sheet is attached. As a long-established institution in our local area, the Association needs no introduction. During our preliminary assessment, we particularly appreciated the fact that Piccola Casa Federico Ozanam is no longer simply a shelter, but has evolved into a welcoming residential community. Its mission has shifted towards supporting the social and employment reintegration of its residents.To achieve this, the Association has developed tailored programmes for its residents, supported by a …
THE IDEA In the presence of numerous members of the Rotary Clubs of the Lario Group, the service project “What Is Essential Is Invisible to the Eye” was officially launched. The initiative involved equipping the Silk Museum with facilities to make visits accessible to people who are blind or visually impaired. The project With this initiative, the Rotary Clubs of the Lario Group put into practice the Rotary theme of the year, “Caring for People with Disabilities,” by supporting the Museum in the creation of audio guides, which can also be used by visitors with hearing impairments, and tactile panels that help both blind and sighted visitors understand the complex process that transforms the silkworm’s cocoon into woven fabric. The materials are currently available in two languages, with additional European and non-European languages planned for the future. THE PROJECT We contacted students who graduated from secondary school with the highest possible marks, recognising their commitment, perseverance, and dedication throughout their school years.We offered them a cybersecurity course delivered by one of our Club members, together with a mentoring programme (“light mentoring”) through which our members—where possible with academic backgrounds similar to the students’ chosen fields of study—make their time and experience available by offering advice, guidance, and support throughout their university journey.This initiative not only provides a meaningful and lasting way of recognising outstanding young people, but also helps maintain a connection that may encourage their future involvement in Rotaract and Rotary, while promoting, in the long term, the growth of our membership through the participation of committed and talented young people.
THE PROJECT We supported the training of puppies to help prevent diabetic crises in children. We chose to focus on a health issue that is particularly sensitive for children and adolescents, aiming to provide both immediate practical support and a long-term educational benefit. This initiative also enables us to recognise and reward deserving young people in a meaningful and lasting way, while maintaining a connection that may encourage their future involvement in Rotaract and Rotary, thereby fostering the growth of our membership with committed and qualified young people. We therefore supported the training of two diabetic alert dogs. These dogs are able to warn people with diabetes of an impending change in blood glucose levels. This ability is particularly important for children with diabetes who, while playing, sleeping or engaged in other activities, may not notice the onset of a diabetic crisis and could risk losing consciousness or even their …
