THE PROJECT
In reality, the speaker, a well-known agronomist, was not present as President but as coordinator of the “Lariorti” project. This is a shared project among the Rotary clubs of the Como area to promote better understanding of environmental issues and provide initial instruction for cultivating a vegetable garden in schools and in some associations.
The speaker, thanks to many years of work experience, conducted theoretical and practical lessons in several primary schools involving approximately 540 children, assisted by their teachers and Rotarian volunteers including our President Croci. With several slides, he pleasantly shared this, at times challenging, experience and then presented those in attendance with two booklets: “Growing a Vegetable Garden: Valter Pironi’s Advice for Budding Gardeners and Beyond.”
For example, how many know what Cucurbitaceae are? Do you remember the last time you enjoyed a “Solanum Lycopersicum”? Do you know what “mulching” is? If you can answer these questions, you are already excellent gardeners!
